Isn’t it ironic that today—coincidentally—also marks the 50th anniversary of the birth control pill?
When it was introduced back in 1960, some people feared that the planet’s population would plummet. In fact, we humans continue to reproduce at a reprehensible rate. Some estimate that by 2020 our global population will be close to 8 billion. Eight billion people!
It’s amazing that Earth can support the 6 billion humans who are already roaming around. But I seriously doubt that it will be able to support another 2 billion. There just aren’t enough resources—food, water, oil, land—to go around.
So as we celebrate and honor our mothers today, let’s not forget to also celebrate and honor the most important of them all: Mother Earth.
